Hillary Clinton Presidency will undermine American Democracy

Amos Ajo

While speaking at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum on May 28, 2003, former President Bill Clinton announced that Congress should change the 22nd Amendment that limits a president to two terms. "I think since people are living much longer . . . the 22nd Amendment should probably be modified to say two consecutive terms instead of two terms for a lifetime," Clinton said. It has always been the desire of President Clinton to get back to power.
It was the idea of George Washington to have term limit. He was afraid of future presidents like Bill Clinton. Washington pointed out that "we shouldn't allow any one person to hold power for long because power corrupts." Washington made the point when he stepped down as president after two terms. Thomas Jefferson continued Washington's limit of two terms and the tradition lasted until FDR.

"Washington established the tradition of a two-term limit on the president that continued for 142 years until broken by Franklin Roosevelt. Once the tradition was broken, Congress moved quickly to make it the law of the land through the 22nd Amendment. This was a critical piece of legislation because presidential power is like poison. The power can turn human beings to Mabuto,Idi Amin, Castro etc. Fortunately, the founding fathers of this great country were more interested in creating a great democracy.

What many observers of this great democracy are beginning to see is that there is a danger underway to undermine the American democracy by what is going on now with Bill Clinton. To circumvent the law, Bill Clinton is using his wife to achieve his desire of holding on to presidential power. So far he has been very successful. When you take a look at all the super delegates that have signed up for his wife Hillary, all of them were individuals that benefited under his administration or individuals that he did some favor to them. Bill Clinton has been very open about this. People who know Gov. Bill Richardson are saying that he does not want to endorse Hillary Clinton because she is too controlling and divisive person but Clinton is almost forcing him to endorse her on the ground that he offered him key positions during his administration.

Hillary Clinton will finally end up the nominee of her party because of the super delegates who benefited from her husband. I hope this will not be the case because I am afraid this will undermine our democracy. Let’s face it, with president Clinton, we will not be hearing of Hillary Clinton running for the President of United States.
